Enjoy your summer holidays at The Royal Hotel

The Royal Hotel is a luxurious and friendly home away from home and we invite you to enjoy a wonderful break with us during the summer holidays.

Aside from our first class dining and excellent accommodation we’re in what we believe to be the perfect location to explore North Devon.

Being based in the heart of Bideford means we’re ideally placed to easily experience one of Britain’s most beautiful and exciting places to take a summer holiday.

In this news piece, we’re going to sum up some wonderful reasons why summer holidays at The Royal Hotel are a must!

The Tarka Trail

The Tarka Trail is a famous series of foot and cycle paths inspired by the much-loved Tarka the Otter stories. The full trail travels from Braunton in North Devon, through Barnstaple before passing behind The Royal in Bideford. It then goes onward to Mid-Devon.

Between Bideford and Barnstaple, starting from our doorstep, the trail follows the River Taw, passing a number of wonderful locations before reaching Barnstaple.

It’s a 9-mile route and one of the best ways to take in the beauty of North Devon. Along this bit of path you will enjoy the beauty of the beach at Instow and the lovely views at Fremington Quay for lots of photo opportunities and a place to rest.

Alternatively, head in the other direction and towards Torrington and many secrets - you’ll want to take your camera.

To cover more ground and to see more sights, why not spend a day cycling the trail?

Cycling the Tarka Trail

We’d recommend using a bike on the trail to spend the whole day taking in as much of the area as possible.

The trail is flat and paved, so cyclists and walkers can enjoy it simultaneously. Speak to our reception team who will be able to discuss the routes in more details.

Many guests choose to head out with a picnic to make the most of the day, simply following the Tarka Trail with a sense of adventure!

Shopping in Bideford

If something more relaxing is needed, how about a casual shop around Bideford for presents, gifts for others and holiday memorabilia?

Bideford is a wonderful mixture of modern and historical, with national brands sitting beside local businesses on the cobbled streets.

The Royal Hotel is a five-minute walk away from the centre of Bideford and you’ll enjoy the stroll across the historical bridge over the river.

Alternatively, if you don’t mind a short drive, Affinity Outlets shopping centre is just outside Bideford, a 20-30 minute drive away. The outlet has a wide range of brands and popular names, each with outlet discounts.

There’s plenty more to be doing in North Devon too

Discover a wide world of Gardens

Those who enjoy spending time outside will love North Devon. For many, this love of nature includes walking through gardens, taking in plants and seeing grand buildings with stunning grounds. Luckily there are a wide range of gardens and private grounds in the area to explore.

Highlights include; Marwood Hill Garden, Tapeley Park, Castle Hill Gardens, Arlington Court, Broomhill Sculpture Gardens and Hartland Abbey to name a few.

But our pick has to be RHS Gardens Rosemoor!

At Rosemoor, you can enjoy 65-acres of beautifully planted flower beds, set within a pretty wooded valley. Around every corner there's a lovely surprise as the gardens are home to plants from around the world. Events take place through the year, there's lots of shopping to be done and children's activities keep little green-fingers amused.

As an added bonus, because you’re a guest at The Royal Hotel, you’ll receive £8 entry fee instead of £12.65.

We look more at what Rosemoor offers in this news piece.
