Escape to the beach

The varied landscape of the North Devon coast means that there's a beach here for everyone. From dramatic cliffside walks to soaking up the sun on a sandy beach, you're spoilt for choice!

Wander through the quintessentially-British seaside town of Ilfracombe, stopping for some fish and chips, before gazing up at Damien Hurst's Verity or make the most of the sun by spending a day on the golden sands of Saunton, Woolacombe or Croyde, watching the turquoise waves lap at the shore. Alternatively, head onto the pebble ridge at Westward Ho! to explore the rock pools after a delicious afternoon tea.

Tred the Tarka Trail

A Devon holiday would not be complete without a walk along the Tarka Trail. Stroll alongside the River Torridge enjoying unspoilt views over the countryside. Fancy something different to a walk? Hire a bike and explore more of the paths or try your hand at horseriding.

The South West Coast Path offers a number of alternative routes. Saunter across the rolling hills to get up close and personal with the wild beauty of the region or stand atop a cliff, casting your sights out to Lundy Island on the horizon. There truly are some hidden gems in England and Wales, and we believe that many of these can be found in the vicinity of Bideford.

Spot a souvenir

Whether it's your first time in the area or your fifth, picking up a memento of your trip never hurts! The town of Bideford has a lovely high street for you to explore. From independent shops, a bustling Pannier Market and boutiques to high street chains, take a walk through the streets to pick up gifts for those back home.

Alternatively, head to Victoria Park to rest your feet - and maybe purchase an ice cream! It is here that you'll find Charles Kingsley's statue, writer of Westward Ho! - the book that gave the resort its namesake. Kingsley is particularly significant to The Royal Hotel's history. Just ask a member of our friendly staff who will show you the historic Kingsley Suite, the room where parts of Westward Ho! were written.
